“You know why I respect the Democrat Party?” he asked standing at the podium on the debate stage. “Because they fight. Because they’re not willing to back down. And they’re willing to stand up and fight and win. And so I respect them because they are willing to take it to us.”
These were the words of then-presidential candidate Rick Santorum back in 2015. Words which still seem to hold some truth today.
Lately, many officials within the Democrat party have attacked Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT). The reason for those attacks – Sen. Sanders openly backing Heath Mello, the Democratic candidate for Omaha mayor.
Though at first this internal conflict may seem somewhat strange, the Democrat party members’ reasons for criticizing Sanders make sense given Mr. Mello’s (surprisingly) pro-life record.
The former state senator once supported a bill requiring abortion providers to inform abortion seekers as to where they could obtain free ultrasounds. Additionally, the mayoral candidate had co-sponsored the state’s 20-week abortion ban and many other pro-life bills, becoming a reliable proponent for the pro-life movement within his state. He once commented that the enactment of such legislation was a “positive first step to reducing the number of abortions in Nebraska.”
Since then, Mello (a pro-life Catholic) has somewhat reneged on those views. However, the fact remains that compared to many elected Republicans (and even a certain self-proclaimed constitutionalist), Mr. Mello has actually lived out his beliefs.
Would that all of the GOP had that kind of backbone so that we might proudly say, “They fight.”
