The Highest Ambition

Jonathan Paine

What is your highest ambition? Is it that dream job? That perfect retirement? Success?

While these all may be good things in and of themselves, self-serving ambition will eventually be burned away like wood or hay.

When you really think about it, the only things that will last in this life are what we do to impact the lives of others. The positive or negative influence we have on those around us will become our legacy. What we accomplish in this life will eventually be handed down to the next generation.

The more we realize this, the more we will become aware of how our actions are affecting the people we interact with. We would all do well to examine our highest ambition, and see if it is something that will allow us to have that positive impact on the lives of others.

George Washington said, “It should be the highest ambition of every American to extend his views beyond himself, and to bear in mind that his conduct will not only affect himself, his country, and his immediate posterity; but that its influence may be co-extensive with the world, and stamp political happiness or misery on ages yet unborn.”

Ask yourself, what is my highest ambition?
