One of the greatest thrills for the staff and volunteers at Patriot Academy is to see the joy of parents as they observe the transformation and growth of their children as a result of this program. Below is the testimonial of Mrs. Laurel Blomgren, whose daughter, Jessica, was one of this year’s freshmen.
“When my husband came home several months ago, all fired up about a program he had just heard about, I did not know what to think. Send my daughter to Austin, Texas so she could play ‘government’? Needless to say, I was a bit skeptical. However, after a short visit to their web-site I decided it might be a good experience.
There are several steps to the application process for Patriot Academy.   First, Jessica collected references from various family friends. She also wrote a nice essay which made her think very carefully about her own convictions and personal views of the U.S. Constitution. However, the most ominous barrier, in my eyes, was the tuition. I had no idea how we were going to come up with the money. Then we learned that Jessica was expected to campaign for the money. Now the ball was in her court. Though it forced her out of her comfort zone, Jessica found the courage to visit several local businesses, present her ’cause’ and ask for financial support. She exceeded her goal of $750 in just three afternoons.   I really believe that the whole application process itself built up Jessica’s confidence.
I was very excited for her when I put her on the plane that first day. Sending her to Austin for a week was hard on me. This would be her first time away and on her own. I wanted to go with her. I wanted one of those little spy cameras on her jacket. The whole family wanted to know what she was doing. We heard from her a couple of times, which only caused us to want to be there with her all the more. It was a very long five days for me…a very fast and furious five days for Jessica.
When we picked her up at the airport, we got back a different young lady. Jessica now stands taller, speaks with greater confidence, thinks more clearly and makes great eye contact. She recently made a short speech in front of a group of strangers and did an absolutely wonderful job. Her poise and conviction is wonderful. She has made many great, quality friends.  Jessica is anxiously anticipating participating again next year.  Patriot Academy has greatly benefited our family and I recommend it completely. Maybe I’ll apply next year, too. J”
