Our perception of government has changed greatly over the last two centuries in America. It’s clear from the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution that the government is designed to protect our God-given rights, not provide for those rights. This is a huge distinction that has been lost to the majority of today’s generation of political leaders.
Often when you hear politicians and many people talk these days, everyone seems to be looking for what they can get from the government. What can the government do for me? This abandonment of individual responsibility is a dangerous road. From government healthcare insurance to government cell phones, there are a plethora of things the government is trying to provide for “free”.
However, we all know there is no such thing as a “free lunch”. Someone is footing the bill. And in this instance, the bill is not just going to cost us money, but it is going to cost us our freedom. One little bit at a time.
Ben Franklin is credited with saying, “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
Nothing the government can give is worth our freedom.
