The world is becoming more and more interconnected. Technology is making this planet smaller everyday. This can have many benefits including cheaper goods and services and an expansion of knowledge and freedom.
However, it can also cause some problems such as – how should our country interact with other countries around us? Even after the last election, many people are still confused as to what is the best policy for the United States. Should we isolate ourselves? Or should we become more of a global country and view ourselves as global citizens?
As with many things in life, there are more than two options. We should always search beyond a dichotomy of choices for a third option. That third option comes from the Father of our country – George Washington.
He said, “The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible. So far as we have already formed engagements, let them be fulfilled with perfect good faith. Here let us stop.”
Washington believed America would be best off if we freely traded with foreign nations in our best interest while avoiding political entanglements.
