Murderous Democracy

Jonathan Paine

These days, you often hear people refer to America as a Democracy. Many schools and universities even teach it. Yet this is not the case. America is a Republic, which differs greatly from a Democracy.

The founding fathers knew that a pure democracy was not only impractical in a nation the size of the United States, but it was dangerous to liberty itself.

A pure democracy is where each citizen casts a vote on each law, policy, and decision that the government makes. Because the founders realized that man is a fallen creature that acts selfishly when given the chance, they realized that a democracy would quickly descend into mob rule where 51% of people could lawfully take away the rights of the other 49% of people.

A republic on the other hand, institutes the principles of federalism, where government is divided into increasingly local parts that allow individuals to have a direct say in their representation and therefore the laws that are made. A republic also allows the minority to have a balanced voice in their government.

John Adams said, “Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself.”

Pure democracy is dangerous. A republic is the best form of government for protecting our God-given rights.
