The Next Generation – Awakening a Sleeping Giant
“You and I have a rendezvous with destiny.”
– Ronald Reagan –
Emerging out of the Great Depression and on the cusp of war, America teetered in isolation, not seeking to engage in the looming darkness that plagued Europe. Yet, Pearl Harbor would thrust the United States into the war she tried to avoid. This catastrophic event ignited the nation’s internal mechanism, her greatest asset—the American people. As we have seen in the movies, Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto acknowledged this force, “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.”
Is there an awakening happening in our present day? Have public and private circumstances created an environment that is beckoning for greatness to emerge? One may identify the many occurrences of apathy, arrogance, discouragement, hopelessness and lack of direction in this generation. Although there are issues, one must see something beyond the present. There is a sleeping giant emerging in our midst. When awakened to their callings, men and women will live with purpose, serve with excellence, build lasting relationships and leave a dynamic legacy for generations to come.
Vision—A Propelling Force
“Give to us clear vision that we may know where to stand and what to stand for – because unless we stand for something, we shall fall for anything.”
– Peter Marshall –
Why is vision important? As George Washington Carver stated: “Where there is no vision, there is no hope.” Vision is a propelling force that keeps one focused on the purpose for his or her existence. Vision is the two-fold ability to see that God has designed you as valuable and your legacy should influence others to obtain their destiny. Vision does not require you to have all the details figured out. That is what the daily process, known as growth, will develop.
Where do you see yourself in 5, 10, 20 years? What legacy do you intend to leave wherever you go? The principles and values by which you live will provide a guiding boundary to fulfill your purpose. Vision and purpose go hand and hand. Without a vision you are not motivated to fulfill your purpose. Without purpose you have no vision for your life.
You are a significant individual who is called to have a dynamic impact on this generation. The quality of your influence on others makes a difference. A vision is a focus, intent and perspective. It is the motivating factor, the overarching theme for your life. One reason why society may seem uneasy is due to lack of vision. Proverbs 29:18 states: “Where there is no vision, the people perish….” A clear, tangible vision sets the path for growth.
Knowing what you want your life to accomplish will keep you focused when obstacles and difficult moments come. When you are living your life for greatness, you will encounter challenges. Yet, your focus, or vision, will equip you to press forward.
A vision will have you surround yourself with people who want the best for your life. It is wise counsel and valuable advice that will help prepare you for your calling.
A vision not only keeps you focused but also translates into what you do and whom you influence. Your life is influencing someone. You do not live on an island to yourself. Seek to impact people’s lives in a way that inspires others to raise the standard of excellence and pursue a vision for their lives.
“To grasp and hold a vision, that is the very essence of successful leadership.”
– George Washington –
