Can you be a good football player if you don’t care about making touchdowns?
In order to become a good player in any sport, a couple things are necessary. One is you have to really care about the object of your chosen sport. It’s that drive, that desire that moves you to make the sacrifices necessary to accomplish the object of the game.
Another necessary thing is an understanding of the rules, and how to accomplish your goal. Back to football, you have to know the rules, you have to know how to run fast and hit hard. Without this essential information, the competition won’t see you as a threat.
This applies to sports, but it also applies to the political realm.
In his 1833 Commentaries on the Constitution, US Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story said,
The object of government should be to protect the God-given rights of its citizens. To do that, we as citizens have a duty to acquire the knowledge of the means by which that object, that goal, can best be obtained.
